Can non-students live in student accommodation?
This article covers the rules for non-students who want to live in student accommodation.
It is important to be aware that non-students will not be able to live in some student accommodation. Non-students can't live in Halls of Residence but may be able to live in a house, flat or apartment.
Halls of Residence
There are restrictions which means that non-students can't live in Halls or Residence, as this type of accommodation is for the exclusive use of students.
Houses, flats and apartments
This type of accommodation does not have the same restrictions on it and non-students can live in this accommodation. It is important to be aware that the property owner might prefer to rent their property to students, so it is worth making them aware of your non-student status when you contact them.
Student status
If you are not sure if you would be classified as a student these are the criteria used in the UK for full time student status;
- Your course lasts at least 1 calendar or academic year for at least 24 weeks out of the year and
- Normally involves at least 21 hours of study, tuition or work experience per week during term time.
