How to use Accommodation for Students safely

Important guidance on booking properties

At Accommodation for Students, we’re committed to helping you find the right place to live while staying safe in the process. Here’s what you need to know:

Purpose-Built Student Accommodation

It is safe to book purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) directly through our platform, even without a viewing. These properties are professionally managed and meet high standards of safety and quality.

Houses and Flats

If you're considering renting a private house or flat, a bit more caution is needed. While we do verify the landlords who advertise on our platform, we cannot guarantee the security of any money sent to them.

To protect yourself:

  • Always try to view the property in person before making any payment.

  • Never send large sums of money upfront. You should not be asked to pay more than the equivalent of one week’s rent as a holding deposit.

    • (Note: Holding deposits are not permitted in Scotland. If someone requests one, it is against regulations.)

  • Be alert to red flags. If someone asks for more than a week’s rent as a deposit or acts suspiciously, take a step back.

If you’re ever unsure about a property or a landlord, please contact the Accommodation for Students team — we’re here to help.
